A MedFlight of Ohio doctor has been named the 2013 recipient of the Medical Transport Leadership Institute (MTLI) Scholarship by the MedEvac Foundation International. John Pakiela, DO, FACEP, an Associate Medical Director at MedFlight of Ohio and the EMS Director at Akron General Medical Center in Akron, Ohio, will receive the scholarship based on his dedication to the critical care transport community. He has 13 years of experience in the air medical community, as both a flight physician and a medical director. He previously served on the AMPA Board for two terms and was a member of the Ohio EMS Board for seven years.

MTLI enhances leadership and management of medical transportation through formal education programs emphasizing management theory and its direct practical application. The scholarship is awarded to individuals who excel in the critical-care transport community based on active involvement, industry achievement, and commitment to critical-care transport services. Sponsored by Metro Aviation, this award recognizes individuals who strive to achieve the highest levels of professionalism and compassionate patient care toward the betterment of the air medical, critical-care transport industry.

Metro Aviation is the sole benefactor of the MTLI Scholarship and “the company participates as a matter of commitment to the air medical industry and the employees who have served in it over the past 30 years,” said Metro Aviation President and Owner Mike Stanberry. “The MTLI Scholarship rewards individuals who possess the same attributes and industry-leading goals that we strive to achieve at Metro Aviation, and we are proud to sponsor this award along with the MedEvac Foundation International.”

“The MedEvac Foundation International is proud to present this scholarship to John, who was selected to receive the award based on his impressive career achievements and contributions to the medical transport community as a whole,” said Foundation Chair Kevin Hutton, MD, FACEP. “This scholarship, particularly when combined with earning a Certified Medical Transport Executive credential, will enable John to continue with and expand his extensive contributions to the field.”

The two-year MTLI Scholarship, established in 2009, will be awarded annually for the next 9 years. Applicants with healthcare or aviation backgrounds are eligible. Applications for next year will be available at www.medevacfoundation.org in the fall. The deadline to apply is Dec. 15; recipients will be notified by March 1, 2014.
